The Safer Project has been created because we believe that safety and professional boundaries deserve to be talked about more openly. Inappropriate behaviour and uncomfortable situations in solo professions should not be normalised.
Our main aims are:
Advocacy
Advocating for safer one-on-one working environments across multiple work disciplines.
Awareness
Promoting safer working environments and challenging the normalisation of inappropriate behaviour.
Community
Creating a supportive space where practitioners can feel heard, connect, learn and feel less alone in their experiences.
Educate & Empower
Providing practical knowledge and resources to help practitioners feel confident with their boundaries and safety.
About The Safer Project

Emma Hayes
Founder, The Safer Project
Owner of Spotlight Massage & Recovery, Nottinghamshire, UK
"Through my own experience as a clinic owner, working as a sports & vocal massage therapist across the UK, I’ve encountered situations where professional boundaries have been compromised, and found myself unsure of how to respond or where to turn for support.
One thing I’ve noticed throughout my own professional journey is that we aren’t always taught how to navigate these situations during our training. We learn how to provide safe and effective treatment, but conversations around professional boundaries, inappropriate client behaviour and what to do when those boundaries are crossed aren’t always given the same attention. This can leave practitioners feeling unprepared when something happens, and experiences can easily be minimised or brushed off as “part of the job”. But I don’t believe inappropriate behaviour should ever become something we simply accept or normalise.
I created The Safer Project because I believe that needs to change. Practitioners deserve to feel safe, respected and supported in their working environments, and they shouldn’t have to navigate difficult or inappropriate situations alone.
The aims set will help to open up the conversation, raise awareness, provide practical support and help create safer working environments for those who work closely with clients."
